Someone thinking about her pregnancy

There it was: a faint line, the word “Pregnant,” or a plus sign. No matter what type of pregnancy test you took, a positive result for an unexpected pregnancy could cause panic. Now, what should you do?

Your first step is to confirm the results and then talk to someone about your situation. You owe it to yourself to get the facts before deciding what to do. There is a lot more to know, and the team at Alabama Pregnancy & Family Center can help you.

Get Your Pregnancy Confirmed First

Did you know that it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test and no longer be pregnant? It’s true. The March of Dimes suggests that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and the number of miscarriages may be as high as 30% before a woman even knows she’s pregnant.

At Alabama Pregnancy & Family Center, we provide a free, limited obstetrical ultrasound if you receive a positive result from one of our pregnancy tests. An ultrasound reveals vital information about your pregnancy. You’ll learn:

  • Whether or not you’ve miscarried. If an ultrasound detects a heartbeat, your pregnancy is continuing.
  • If the location of your pregnancy is correct. Some pregnancies form outside the uterus and can be life-threatening.
  • How far along are you in your pregnancy? The number of weeks you have been pregnant can determine your options.

Learn About Your Options

Often, women think their only option when faced with an unexpected pregnancy is abortion, but you have other choices. Deciding how to handle your pregnancy is a life-changing decision, so give it the time and consideration it deserves.

You have three options: have an abortion, make an adoption plan, or choose to parent. Schedule an appointment at Alabama Pregnancy & Family Center to review all three.

Abortion

There are two types of abortion: medical and surgical. Usually, the method you qualify for is determined by the number of weeks you have been pregnant. Although we don’t perform or refer for abortion, we’re not afraid to talk about it. We provide factual, medically based information about procedures, the side effects to expect, and the potential physical and mental risks.

Adoption

We are not a licensed child-placing agency, but we can offer referrals to reputable adoption coordinators in our area. Today’s adoption process is very different from what it was a few decades ago.

Now, the expectant mother or birth mother (if you’ve already given birth) makes all of the decisions. She selects the adoptive family that will raise her child and determines how much contact she would like to have with them after finalization.

Parenting

Just because your pregnancy was unexpected doesn’t mean it’s impossible to parent. We offer many resources for parenting, including free parenting classes. Plus, we can refer you to various community resources to help you.
